Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the October 31st each year, especially in the United States of America, but nowadays in many other countries as well. Halloween is traditionally associated with ghosts, witches and scary stories. Pumpkins are carved with faces and a candle placed inside to make a Jack O’Lantern. Kids love to dress up to play games or go trick-or-treating.

Halloween is also often marked by schools and community groups. It is not uncommon for schools to hold Halloween themed events, and teachers to organize Halloween games in their classrooms. One particular game that is ideal for classrooms at this time of year – it can be a lot of fun, is easy to place, can be educational, and does not require expensive or specialist materials – is a game of Halloween bingo.

Halloween bingo is played very much like a normal game of bingo. Each student is given a bingo card or bingo card containing a grid of items. However, Halloween bingo cards are printed with words or phrases relating to Halloween (”ghost”, “Jack O’Lantern”, “pumpkin”, “witch”, etc.) instead of the usual numbers. Thanksgiving is a harvest festival that is celebrated principally in the United States and Canada. In the United States it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, and is a federal holiday (in Canada it is held on the second Monday in October, coinciding with Columbus Day in the United States). Common activities associated with Thanksgiving include a break from work or school, a Thanksgiving dinner, parades, and American football games.

In the United States, Thanksgiving is very much associated with the survival of early English settlers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, with the help of the local Native American population. As result, the run-up to Thanksgiving provides a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about their history. Schools often organize events such as Thanksgiving plays, but individual teachers can also introduce Thanksgiving-activities into their classroom – why not a game of Thanksgiving bingo?

Thanksgiving bingo is played just like a normal game of bingo (with the teacher taking the part of the bingo caller), but, instead of using standard bingo cards, cards printed with words or phrases related to the Thanksgiving holiday are used instead. It can be a lot of fun, and can also help remind students of the history of Thanksgiving.

Most people are familiar with the game of bingo. It is play using bingo cards contain a five by five grid of squares, with each square containing a word or number. Bingo is a popular and easy to learn game that is widely played around the world. Most people of course play the game for social reasons, but the game is increasingly being applied and adapted to educational uses, particularly in schools.

The main reasons why bingo is being used in this way is that it is fun, has simple game mechanics, can be easily be adapted in multiple ways, and does not require expensive materials, specialist equipment, or unusual resources that are out of reach to most educators.

In some situations, for example, for students learning English as a foreign language (EFL), simply playing the game can be an educational experience in itself. In EFL class, simply explaining and learning how to play the game, in English, can be a challenge for students.

It is a very simple game, one that can be learned in minutes, but which nevertheless provides enjoyment to many people. What you may not have realized however is, with a few simple modifications, bingo can be adapted for classroom use, and used by teachers as an educational tool.

Bingo can be an enjoyable activity for many students, and of course this can help them engage with the subject, but it is also ideal for classroom use since it does not require expensive or specialist materials, and the game is flexible enough to be adapted for teaching almost any subject.

The main way that the game is adapted to different subjects, is by using bingo cards printed with items chosen by the teacher, instead of standard numbered bingo cards. The items on the cards can be anything that the teacher feels appropriate for the subject in question, be they words, phrases, or perhaps math problems or musical symbols. Additionally, in some cases, the game rules may also be modified somewhat.

Examples of educational variants of bingo include

* Reading Bingo – This game is indented for younger students learning to read. They must simply find words on their cards when they are read out. Very often the words are chosen from the Dolch sight word list, or similar introductory word lists

It is probably fair to say that most people know how to play the game of bingo. It’s a simple and easy to learn game that involves crossing squares off bingo worksheets (also known as “bingo cards” or “bingo boards”) as items are called out, in random order, by the bingo caller.

While many of us have played the standard game of bingo, what you may not know is that many variants of bingo are now being used in today’s classrooms. Many of us, perhaps most of adults, have played bingo at one point or another in their lives. Maybe only once or twice, but nevertheless we know the rules – get a bingo card, check off items from your card as they are called out, and try to be the first person to shout out “Bingo!” if you achieve the winning pattern (a line of five items in any direction in most variants of the game, but sometimes other shapes or patterns may be used).

One thing that you may not have thought about, is how bingo cards are created. This is because, for most us, when we played the game, we were simply given a bingo card that was already printed with numbers, and creating a unique bingo card for each player was simply somebody else’s problem.

Today, you will find however that themed versions of bingo are growing in popularity. At Christmas, on July 4th, Halloween, Easter and other holidays, many people like to organize games based around the particular holiday in question. In this case, the bingo cards are in fact printed with words or phrases relating to the particular holiday. Similarly, more and more teachers are now using bingo as a classroom activity in a diverse range of subjects including K-12 Reading lessons, ESL (English as a Second Language), math, science, foreign languages and more – and in this case, bingo cards containing items appropriate for the particular lesson are used.

So how are these custom bingo cards prepared? One possibility is of course to do so manually – a person could prepare bingo cards using pen and paper, or even a word processor, but it would be a very time consuming process. Educational bingo is increasingly popular as a classroom activity as more and more teachers are realizing that the game can easily be adapted to a variety of different lesson plans. Apart from the simple fact that students of all ages can enjoy the game, there are many other reasons by bingo is growing in popularity, not least the fact that it’s very inexpensive to play (important given the constraints that today’s teachers work under), but also the facts that game play mechanics can be modified to teaching pretty much any subject to any age range of students.

Bingo can play a role in teaching many different subjects, including math (the squares on bingo cards can be printed with math problems for which students must write in the answers rather than simply marking off squares), telling the time, geography, history, science, foreign languages, and yes, reading. In fact, bingo particularly excels in reading classes, and it is here that the game is most commonly encountered in schools.

In reading bingo, the game is played using the same basic game play mechanics as traditional bingo – the player’s (student’s) objective is to find a line of five matching items vertically, horizontally or diagonally as the items are announced by the bingo caller (teacher), however the bingo cards are printed with words instead of the usual numbers. These words can be sight words (words that students must learn to immediately recognize in order to achieve reading fluency), words that students are in the process of practicing this week, or they can be chosen specially in order to practice a variety of phonics games. Some examples of phonics games, include the teacher asking students to find rhymes, find a longer word that contains a shorter word or sound, find a word that the teacher reads out slowly (e.g. “fff-lll-aaa-p”) so that students must practice “blending” letters, and so on.

Ice Breaker Bingo

At the start of a school year, or in an event such as seminar or workshop, it can be helpful for the teacher or organizer to find a fun activity that will facilitate introductions. One such activity that is definitely worth considering is the game of ice breaker bingo. Ice breaker bingo is in reality at least two different games – both variants of the classic game of bingo, and the teacher or organizer should select the most appropriate version of ice breaker bingo depending on the age, confidence level and English-language skills of the players (or students).

1. In both versions of the game, each player is given their own bingo card. The objective of the game is to be the first player to achieve a line of five marked off items on your card, whether that line is horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

2. In the simpler version of ice breaker bingo, the bingo cards contain the names of members of the group – a different name in each square. What happens is the teacher (or organizer) goes around the group asking people to stand up one at a time, telling the others a little bit about themselves, and finish by stating their name. The other players can then mark that name off their card, and the first player to achieve a line of five can call a bingo – however their bingo only counts if they can correctly identify the people corresponding to each of the names in their winning line.

3. In the more complex version of the game, the squares of the bingo cards are printed with descriptions or activities (e.g. “owns a cat”, “can play piano”, “is a vegetarian”). The players then circulate among themselves trying to find others who match these descriptions, and, when they find a match, they write that person’s name in the square. The catch is that each name may only be used once per card, and that of course encourages the players to meet and talk with as many other members of the group as they can.
